Playing, composing and teaching music in an excellent way have long traditions in Hungary. Hungarian composers, like Ferenc Liszt and Béla Bartók are renowned worldwide, not to mention Zoltán Kodály, who was also an outstanding music teacher and the inventor of the tonic sol fa method. Their living spirit makes Hungary an excellent place to study music.
The Faculty of Music and Visual Arts - the youngest faculty of the University of Pécs - was founded in 1996. Its ancestors were the Pedagogical College's Departments of Drawing and Singing dating back to 1953. In 2000 the Pécs Teacher-Training Branch of the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy became part of the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts. Its ancestor, the Conservatory, taught tonic sol-fa teachers from 1952 onward, being later joined by the instrumental departments.
Since its foundation, the Academic Staff of the Faculty, composed of excellent artists, who play an outstanding role in the life of the region, has coordinated artistic education at the University. The Faculty is now divided into two institutions: the Institute of Music and the Institute of Visual Arts.
Students of music and their teachers regularly appear at various concerts in the town. As a result of the integration process, the Ferenc Liszt Concert Hall is also managed by the Faculty. The musicians, choral conductors and choirs of the Faculty have appeared in several countries of the world, e.g. Austria, France, Germany, Great-Britain, Italy and Japan.
The faculty of Music and Visual Arts offers the following international programs:
- Instrument teacher, chamber performer course
(4 years, College degree)
Instruments: piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute
- Solo vocal teacher and vocal chamber performer course
(4 years, College Degree)
